Chamber Chat Podcast: Getting the human services message to the business community!
As a human services leader, one of the most undervalued tasks is building and nurturing relationships with people outside of your field. In today's interconnected world, collaboration with the business community isn't just advantageous; it's essential for amplifying your impact and creating new revenue streams in support of your mission.
Recently, I had the privilege of participating in a podcast hosted by Danielle McFadden, the CEO of the Greater Lowell Chamber of Commerce, titled "Inside Lowell’s Chamber Chat." The focus of our conversation was on promoting a fundraising event for Incompass Human Services, an organization dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities. But I also took the opportunity to introduce her audience to me, touching on my career arc that led to become a marketing executive in the human services space.
While I was sure to give the fundraising event the focus it deserves, it was not lost on me the opportunity that I have through engaging with 501(c)6 organizations like chambers of commerce or business groups. These engagements are more than just networking opportunities; they are strategic moves to cultivate relationships that can translate into broader visibility, financial support, volunteer initiatives, and even potentially highly-qualified individuals to serve on your board.
Now admittedly I may be somewhat biased with my take, but that doesn’t preclude me from sharing it! Earlier in my career I was the marketing director for the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, spending nearly five years engaging with members and advocating for economic development in the region. Coupled with my current role as Vice Chair of the Greater Lowell Chamber, I have some pretty unique and valuable insights into leveraging these relationships for organizational growth - something I’m happy to share with my audience here!
These partnerships bridge the gap between the corporate and social sectors, demonstrating that businesses have a stake in social issues and can play a pivotal role in driving positive change. So how do you get started?
Join your local Chamber - it’s that easy!
Attend Chamber events - remember you only get out what you put in…
Come prepared - reach out to the Chamber staff prior to the event and ask for a list of attendees.
Use the 5-5-5 method to get the most out of your time…or start with the “2-2-2” method if it’s easier. What’s that look like?
Aim to meet five new people at the event.
Nurture relationship with 5 of your contacts at the event.
Send five follow-up emails after the event.
I invite you to listen to our insightful conversation on "Inside Lowell’s Chamber Chat,” but remember this opportunity wasn’t just handed to me. I worked hard to cultivate relationships and build the Incompass brand within the business community. You can too!
Let's continue to champion collaboration and collective action for the betterment of our communities.
